Fishing Report June 24, 2009

Fishing continues to be hot off Nanaimo.  Multiple reports have had large springs to the boat and many cannot remember fishing this good in recent years.  The weather took a turn today, with wind and rain, but considering how hot and dry the past month has been, we welcome the respite with open arms. We hope the wind abates overnight so we can return to the water on Thursday to take advantage of the fishing opportunities lying just outside our harbour.

The usual spots continue to be hot, including Neck Point, the Fingers as well as Thrasher Rock.  We are having large tide changes over the next few days which does dramatically affect fish activity.  The fish are biting in short feeding slots so listen to your guide when he suggests the most productive times.  The depths of choice continue to be around 145-200′ during the day with 45-90′ at first and last light.  The prawning has been negatively affected due to the local commercial harvest and that will not change for another 6 weeks when the ‘big boys’ are off the water for the season.  In the meanwhile crabbing has been better than it has been in years and my last 7 charters have had full limits of large dungeness crab.  Mmmmm…just in time for summer cook outs!

We have some time available this weekend (F/S/S) should you find the desire to go fishing!
